Leading societal resilience

Mon, 24 Jun 2024 04:44:55 +0000

Organization: University of Manchester
Start date: 9 Jul 2024
End date: 9 Jul 2024
Registration deadline: 8 Jul 2024

We look forward to welcoming you to the next National Consortium for Societal Resilience (NCSR+) webinar on Leading societal resilience held jointly with the Resilience Beyond Observed Capabilities Network+ (RBOC+) project. Attendees must register for the webinar at the MS Teams link below.

This webinar will focus on the mindsets and skillsets needed to lead societal resilience. CROs and resilience professionals will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of societal resilience, so it is vital that as individuals they have the skillset of a resilient leader.

Date: 9th July 2024, 10.00am-11.30am (UK time)

Our speakers:

  • Professor Caroline Field, Partner, PA Consulting
  • Mike Adamson, Director, Systems Leadership Development

Traditional crisis response skills are necessary, but alone are no longer sufficient to actively build resilience at the societal level, particularly when communities rarely “bounce back better” after an emergency. Rather, leaders must possess a unique blend of values, skills and dispositions, to enable a whole system critical shift in mindset from reactive to proactive, appreciating the interdependence between short term threat and long-term community resilience.

Resilience professionals must themselves be resilient, if they are to empower others to lead within their communities and organisations and bridge the gap between top-down and bottom-up resilience building initiatives. A resilient leader must be able to lead during uncertainty, change, and crisis, but also have the skills to build trust, cohesion, and capacity across a wide variety of systems and with a diverse range of people.

NCSR+ / RBOC+ webinars are designed for resilience practitioners, resilience partnerships and partner organisations to share insights and lessons on developing societal resilience that others may find useful.

Who can register for this course?

This course is designed for peacebuilding professionals who want to make practical use of Environmental Peacebuilding in their work. However, material for preparation can be provided by the trainer prior to the training. If you have any doubts whether you are sufficiently qualified for the course, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Depending on methods and topic of the training, we limit the number of available spaces to a manageable size (a maximum of 20 participants). Register early to reserve your place!

Content

  • Understanding the relationship between environmental change, conflict and its resolution is essentially an investigation into the interconnection between two, heuristically divided, complex adaptive systems: ecology and societal conflict.
  • While the exact causal relationships among climate, fragility, and conflict are inherently complex and sometimes contradictory, there is no doubt that climate change is having extreme effects on ecologies, livelihoods, resource use, economies, and health, gender dynamics, migration, and governance.
  • Complexity-informed approaches, such as systems thinking, must therefore become the new norm across the triple nexus and complexity must be addressed through integrated or at least strategically coordinated programming. This participatory workshop therefore uses systems based tools to investigate the integration between environmental impacts, peace, and conflict.
  • Echoing established work on collective action for systemic change, there is emerging evidence that strategic integrated programming in fragile, climate and conflict-affected situations can provide what is often called “co-benefits” across different sectors. In other words, the interconnectedness of different risk profiles in a climate-affected world, also presents new opportunities, if programing takes this interconnection into account. Systemic, not sectoral change must become the new norm.

Objectives

  • Gain the ability to conduct a systems-based environmental peace conflict analysis
  • Deliver programming support based on such an analysis that addresses environmental impacts, conflict and fragility together.

Key Concepts

  • Environmental Peacebuilding
  • Systems thinking
  • Collective Action

Methodology

The course uses real-life cases, building on participants own experience, to build systems maps of environment, fragility, peace linkages and develops programing advice by finding leverage, and subsequently entry points into these systems.

In the course, participants use a variety of tools, including a digital learning platform, a video conferencing tool, and an online whiteboard. Participants should therefore have a good internet connection (1 Mbit down/upload or better). A headset is highly recommended.

Workload

Deliverables:

  • A real-life environmental peace and conflict analysis and programming entry points (group work).
  • After a successful participation, participants receive a certificate and become part of our alumni
    network.

Total expected weekly hours: 10 to 12 hours per week.

Content

  • Dialogue remains one of the most used methods in peacebuilding. It is versatile and can be adapted to almost any purpose. Dialogue plays a central role in conflict transformation. It can help people respond creatively to social and political conflict and lay the foundations for alternative futures. The basic assumption underpinning dialogue is that under appropriate conditions interpersonal contact is one of the most effective ways to improve communication, understanding and interaction between opposing groups.
  • Community dialogue plays a pivotal role in fostering understanding, reconciliation, and sustainable peace within societies. It provides a platform for diverse voices to be heard, grievances to be addressed, and common ground to be found. Through open and respectful communication, communities can bridge divides, build trust, and collectively navigate towards peaceful resolutions to conflicts. Understanding how dialogue works, the ability to convene and facilitate dialogue, to design a dialogue process or to manage a dialogue project, are some of the core competences for peace work.
  • Training peace workers in dialogue skills and competences is therefore an important task for advancing their work in peacebuilding.

Objectives

  • Understanding principles of different dialogue approaches and terms
  • Being able to design inclusive dialogue projects that take different needs, privilege and power differences
  • into account and implement appropriate dialogue formats and facilitation methods, tools and skills
  • Understanding group dynamics and the role and expectations on a dialogue facilitator
  • Discern the complexity of different contexts and have come up with personal methods in dealing with complexity and difficulties
  • Being aware of opportunities, but also limits of dialogue processes (within the participant's own contexts)

Trauma-responsive Project Planning

Fri, 21 Jun 2024 00:53:19 +0000

Organization: Forum Ziviler Friedensdienst e.V. (Forum Civil Peace Service)
Start date: 2 Oct 2024
End date: 23 Oct 2024
Registration deadline: 18 Sep 2024

Schedule:

Technical Check: on 27 September 2024 from 13:30 to 14:30 CEST
Online Live Sessions: from 2 to 23 October 2024, every Wednesday from 13:30 to 17:30 CEST

Who can register for this course?

The course is designed for people who have been working to understand the sources/causes/origins of trauma responses, the diverse impacts of trauma on individuals and collectively, and how those impacts - and responses to them - can sustain or interrupt cycles of harm. After establishing a broad foundational understanding of these dynamics (ideally in prior learning, though we will touch on this foundation at the opening of this course), people can focus on the specific application of that knowledge to project planning and management. As planners, designers, implementers, and evaluators of projects and programs in traumagenic circumstances, we do well to ask different questions that emphasise the realities of trauma responses in our planning, implementation, and evaluation processes. Team leaders, individuals working independently, facilitators and trainers, project designers, implementers, and evaluators can all benefit from this course that invites participants to focus trauma-responsiveness on project design and planning.

Depending on methods and topic of the training, we limit the number of available spaces to a manageable size (a maximum of 20 participants). Register early to reserve your place!

Content

The four weeks will begin with orientation in the group - including finding study pairs or triads - and the course material, which will include an assessment framework and readings that can enhance participants’ lenses for applying trauma responsiveness to project planning.

In the second week, the participants identify challenges, resources, and possibilities for trauma-responsive project planning, looking at specific ways the group has experienced trauma-responsive or trauma-clueless project and program management; participants are invited to work with the assessment framework using instructor-provided case studies and/or bring resources and cases that have been part of their experience.

In the third week, the conversations that emerge in the second week will continue, inviting small group work related to challenges, resources, and possibilities. That week, participants will create and share a 5-minute video or podcast, and will be responsible for listening to and offering feedback/questions to approximately 4 others’ short presentations.

In the fourth and final session, there will be room to discuss these final projects; acknowledge the possibilities, boundaries, and limitations for integrating trauma-responsiveness into peacebuilding projects; and close the training. All sessions (and self-guided learning) will involve some self-care and collective care practice.

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will have:

  • deepened their understanding of the meaning of being “trauma-responsive” and the implications for peace and conflict analysis, project planning and implementation, and organizational functioning
  • engaged with a trauma-informed assessment framework related to their active and/or past projects
  • explored and shared resources for understanding and addressing the intersections of trauma (collective, personal, relational, organizational, cultural, structural, historical, trans-generational) and their work realities
  • considered possibilities, boundaries, and limitations – personally and professionally – for addressing the impacts of trauma
  • practiced body-mind tools to reignite personal and team safety, dignity, and belonging in the face of chronic violence and uncertainty

Key Concepts

Being trauma responsive involves not only cultivating knowledge and capacity to speak about trauma and resilience in non-stigmatizing ways, but also engaging energy in meeting needs that emerge in the midst and aftermath of traumagenic circumstances.

Trauma responsiveness requires asking questions and taking action first and frequently within ourselves as practitioners. From this starting-with-self foundation, the participants can move to exploring organizational support for self-care and collective care.

While integration of care practices is essential to trauma-responsive project planning, so are structural efforts to meet justice needs, address historical harms, and practice sharing power: for example, who is in leadership (and not)? Who can participate (and not)? How do individuals and organizations acknowledge harm and work toward accountability and repair? What policies and processes support a just environment? What supports exist toward safety, belonging, dignity and shared power? How do we address gaps?

Methodology

The learning methodology centers participants’ experiences and questions they bring to the training and will adapt content to emergent questions. The trainers approach is grounded in about 20 years of theory and practice in multiple environments and centers the idea that a trauma-responsive learning community makes space to hold discomfort, with care and attentiveness to safety, dignity and belonging. The participants are invited to engage their own body-mind-spirit and experience in analytical, playful, and stress-relieving exercises; the approach makes space for unexpected learning and emergent themes, as well as the pre-planned content.

In the course, participants use a variety of tools, including a digital learning platform, a video conferencing tool, and an online whiteboard. Participants should therefore have a good internet connection (1 Mbit down/upload or better). A headset is highly recommended.

Workload

  • Participants will be assigned 1-2 hours of readings, as well as questions to explore within a pair or triad, in between synchronous group learning sessions.
  • Participants will produce a 5-minute podcast or video presentation to share with classmates communicating one of the ways they plan to apply our learning.
  • As a final deliverable, participants may choose one of the following:
    a) Design a case study and accompanying questions that can help project team members sharpen their lenses toward trauma-responsive paths, practices and policies.
    b) Create a 2-page guide of key challenges and possibilities to shape trauma-responsive project planning.
    c) Evaluate a current or past project using the trauma-responsive organizational assessment questions.
    d) Creative option: participants may propose another way of integrating the course learning.

After a successful participation, participants receive a certificate and become part of our alumni network.

Total expected weekly hours: 5 to 7 hours per week

ILS HEAT Refresher 1-day Course

Thu, 20 Jun 2024 01:40:47 +0000

Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Organization: International Location Safety
Start date: 19 Sep 2024
End date: 19 Sep 2024
Registration deadline: 18 Sep 2024

For those travelling to high risk and remote environments, it is critically important to maintain your personal security awareness and first aid knowledge.

Our one day residential skills refresher course is very practical. It utilises our huge training area to refresh many of the skills learnt on our ILS HEAT 3-day course, but also builds on those skills to provide a new, deeper level of knowledge.

On this course, learning is done through experience, delegates are immersed in engaging simulations that work across our three learning strands; 'human' security, 'hard' or physical security and first aid. Our simulations are then followed by a thorough, immediate debriefing process.

This training programme is suitable for those who completed the ILS HEAT training up to three years ago. We do accept delegates from other programmes but would ask that you contact us upon enrolment so that we can ensure this is the right training for you.

ILS HEAT 3-day course

Thu, 20 Jun 2024 01:39:46 +0000

Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Organization: International Location Safety
Start date: 16 Sep 2024
End date: 18 Sep 2024
Registration deadline: 13 Sep 2024

Our three day ILS HEAT training (formerly known as SAFA) programme is delivered regularly in the UK (close to Gatwick Airport) and Kenya (close to Nairobi).

The course is delivered by a mixed gender team of professional security advisors and medics, using up-to-date theory and best practice principles on risk mitigation, informed by our ongoing risk advisory field work around the world.

Throughout the programme the instructors link three distinct topics:

Human Security

  • The human factors that affect safety and security. Our team help delegates to understand the 'drivers’ to interpersonal violence, and their own attitudes and responses to it.

Physical Security

  • Abduction, blast threats, vehicle check points, weapon effects; the ILS team explore and explain tactics employed by armed actors around the world. Delegates will learn how to reduce their personal and team vulnerabilities to these threats.

First Aid

  • Basic Life Support for remote locations where access to definitive care is not easily accessible. The reality of delivering this kind of first aid can mean improvising equipment, and making difficult and pressured decisions.

At the end of the training, delegates will be able to:

  • Conduct a context analysis and a personal travel risk assessment
  • Explain their personal responses to risk
  • Identify measures that reduce personal and team vulnerability to a range of threats
  • Describe actions to take in the event of an incident occurring to reduce its impact
  • List key protective equipment that can be used to increase personal safety
  • Demonstrate how to communicate effectively during a critical incident
  • Practice Basic Life Support
